Perth, Western Australia
Western Australia has over 12,000 kilometres of diverse coast, with unique natural attractions and crystal-clear waters. The majority of the coastal processes and landforms found around the world are exhibited on the Western Australian coast.
Perth, our capital city, is renowned for its fresh, clean and unpolluted environment, relaxed outdoor lifestyle and Mediterranean climate. Perth is superbly located along the tranquil stretches of the Swan River, beside the bushland of Kings Park and is home to stunning beaches for which Perth is famed. South-west of the city is the bustling port city of Fremantle ('Freo') housing an eclectic mix of industry, art, cafes and bars. Freo is known as the world's best-preserved example of at 19th century port streetscape, with Western Australia's largest collection of heritage listed buildings.
Further afield, just 19 km off the coast of Perth is the holiday playground of Rottnest Island, a chilled-out weekend getaway that is perfect for surfing, snorkelling, bike-riding and sight seeing; or simply a casual drink with friends. Head east out of Perth, and find the historical and picturesque wine region of the Swan Valley, or venture south to the renowned Margaret River wine region, home of award-winning wineries situated amongst natural attractions like giant old-growth Karri forests, world-famous surf breaks and the breath-taking Southern Ocean. In the north-west, pristine coasts offer spectacular warm tropical waters and coral reefs for diving, snorkelling and fishing, and the neighbouring dramatic landscapes of the Pilbara and Kimberley are home to a range of unique, largely undisturbed flora and fauna.
Australia's largest state has undergone rapid development over the past decade, largely hinging upon the strong mining industry (including iron ore, natural gas, diamonds and salt) in the north-west. New port facilities and coastal infrastructure have been designed and constructed to support these booming industries. Coasts and Ports 2011 will showcase the diversity of the Western Australian coast and the recent innovative coastal and port developments in the state.
