Field Trip 1 – Northern Beaches
The coastline between Fremantle Harbour and Hillarys Marina provides recreational facilities to over half a million citizens of Perth. Managing the interests of recreational boat owners, beachgoers (swimming, snorkelling, diving and fishing), sports clubs, developers and the environment is a challenging task. The management task is shared between the State Government and seven Local Government Authorities.
The environment along this coastline varies from sandy beaches to rocky coast, with a range of perched beaches and structures. A range of management responses along these beaches have been required due to the inconsistent coastal response to development, and modification to hydrodynamic forcing and sediment supply.
This tour highlights the diverse coastal environments, along with the coastal infrastructure and beach renourishment projects that allow the coastline to be protected and enjoyed. This tour will begin at Hillarys Boat Harbour and head south, stopping at Waterman's, North Beach and the recently redeveloped Scarborough Beach.

The Outer Harbour, 20 kilometres further south on the shores of Cockburn Sound was opened on 11 January 1955. Its deepwater bulk port facilities were developed to service the Kwinana industrial area, which expanded rapidly in the 1960s and '70s.
