Note: We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, Day 1 of the proposed two-day COPEP Sediment Transport Short Course, has been cancelled. The short course will now be conducted only on 27 September 2011 (Day 2) and will focus on the recently developed two dimensional XBEACH model. Please contact EECW if you had previously registered for the Two Day Course or for Day 1 and have not yet been contacted.
COPEP (EA) Short Course
The one day short course will involve presentations discussing XBEACH model formulations, physical background of model concepts and applications (examples). Participants will engage in a "Handson" session involving model setup, running XBEACH and analyzing output. The XBEACH model is especially developed to simulate morphological changes during storm events. During these conditions near shore hydrodynamics are dominated by wave group generated long waves, which are solved for in XBEACH by applying a surfbeat model. Day 2 will involve:
- Theoretical background of surfbeat model;
- Implementation of surfbeat concept in XBEACH;
- Effects of surfbeat on near shore sediment transport and morphodynamics; and
- Applications of XBEACH in both field and laboratory.
Note: Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops.

PIANC Australia Workshop
PIANC Australia is holding a dredging workshop prior to the commencement of the Coasts and Ports 2011 Conference – Environmental Approvals and Management (Where are we today, where are we going and what have we learnt). The workshop will be facilitated by Thomas Wakeman and will include presentations and discussion on current relevant issues in relation to dredging approvals and management in WA and nationally.
Participation from key stakeholders representing government, industry, ports, contractors and consultants is proposed to provide a wide selection of relevant and informative sessions. The workshop will present and include discussion on (amongst other topics) the new Environmental Assessment Guidelines for Dredging (WA EPA – EAG7) and the recently released PIANC Guidelines "Dredging and Port Construction around Coral Reefs" (including one of the contributing authors). PIANC is the global non-political and non-profit organisation providing guidance for sustainable waterborne transport infrastructure for ports and waterways.
